Economic Impact - Enteric Diseases
Flies are important vectors of several enteric infections affecting humans and domestic animals (Fotedar, 1992, Graczyk, 2001).
They have been confirmed as disseminators of:
-
Cholera (Fotedar, 2001, Greenberg, 1973, Kotenok, 1977, Stork, 1979)
-
Salmonellosis (Bidawid, 1978, Olsen, 2000)
-
Shigellosis (Cohen, 1991 , Levine, 1991)
-
Colienteritis (Iwasa, 1999)
-
Campylobacter (Rosef, 1983, Shane, 1985)
There are also reports on transmission of porcine transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGE) through the housefly (Gough, 1983).
The Major Pest

The common house fly, Musca domestica, is the major pest species associated with confined livestock production.
Anti-Fly Products

Integrated fly control means using a two-pronged attack on flies: larvicides to prevent fly larvae developing into adults, and adulticides to kill adult flies.
