Sheep
Source Of High-Quality Natural Products
Worldwide, sheep are even more numerous than cattle. The global population is close to 1.8 billion. Although, economically less important than cattle, they play a major role in several countries, as they are less care-intensive and grow under tougher conditions. Sheep farmers face many challenges to produce meat, wool and milk for our global society. The maxim: “A sheep is another sheep’s worst enemy,” is still valid today as sheep are exposed to many parasites and infectious diseases, which, due to the herding nature of the species, can spread quickly between each other. The major parasites of sheep include internal gut and lung worms, liver fluke, sheep scab or mange, lice, nasal bots and blowflies. In recent years a number of these parasites have developed resistance to existing parasiticides, sheep farmers are in a race to treat their sheep with products that are effective, easy to administer and affordable, to ensure the welfare, health and productivity of their animals.
Taking Protection to a New Level
Novartis Animal Health markets key health solutions for sheep, in particular products to prevent and treat blowfly infestations, internal worms and liver fluke infections – all of which can result in death if not treated. Our R&D efforts continually look to these areas of disease to develop new products and solutions to maintain our farmers’ livelihoods.
