Product Type
CAPSTAR is an oral tablet for control of adult fleas in cats and dogs.
Description and Composition
The active ingredient in CAPSTAR is Nitenpyram
Capstar is available as:
CAPSTAR 11.4mg tablet containing 11.4 mg nitenpyram.
CAPSTAR 57.0mg tablet containing 57.0 mg nitenpyram.
Properties
Nitenpyram, the active ingredient of Capstar, belongs to the chemical class of neonicotinoids which bind and inhibit insect specific nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.
Nitenpyram interferes with normal nerve transmission and leads to the death of the insect.
Nitenpyram does not inhibit acetylcholinesterase.
Indications
CAPSTAR is indicated for the rapid treatment of fleas on cats and dogs.
Dosage and Administration
CAPSTAR is given orally at the minimal dose of 1mg nitenpyram per kg body weight according to the following table:

Dogs over 57 kg are given an appropriate combination of tablets.
CAPSTAR should be given orally, with or without food, on any day when fleas are seen on the animal. No more than one treatment should be given per day.
If a continuous flea infestation is observed after using CAPSTAR, the attending veterinarian should be consulted for further advice.
Special Precautions and Warnings
For the first hour after administration, the pet may scratch more than normal. This effect is caused by the fleas reacting to the product.
Formulations and Packages
There are 2 tablet strengths available:
CAPSTAR tablets containing 11.4 mg nitenpyram.
CAPSTAR tablets containing 57.0 mg nitenpyram.
Both tablet sizes are available in cardboard boxes with 1 aluminum blister containing 6 tablets.
