FASCINEX® / SOFOREN®

Product Type

Oral anthelmintic for the control of fasciolosis in cattle, sheep and goats

Description and Composition

2 ready-to-use suspensions are available:

  • FASINEX 10% contains 10 g triclabendazole per 100 ml.
  • FASINEX 5% contains 5 g triclabendazole per 100 ml.

Tablets of 2 strengths are available in some countries:

  • FASINEX 900 contains 900 mg triclabendazole per tablet.
  • FASINEX 250 contains 250 mg triclabendazole per tablet.

Properties

Triclabendazole, the active ingredient, is a benzimidazole. It binds to tubulin impairing intracellular transport mechanisms and interferes with protein synthesis. Triclabendazole is specifically active against Fasciola, Fascioloides and Paragonimus.

The unique efficacy of FASINEX against the early immature and immature Fasciola stages makes this product particularly useful for the treatment of outbreaks of acute and subacute fasciolosis and for the strategic control of Fasciola infections. In addition, the efficacy against the 3 stages accelerates recovery of health and thus productivity.

FASINEX is well tolerated by animals of any age and breed, by animals in poor condition, under stress and during pregnancy.

Interactions with other products e.g. anthelmintics against round worms are not known.

Indications

FASINEX is indicated for the treatment and control of acute, subacute and chronic fasciolosis due to early immature, immature and adult stages of Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica in cattle, sheep and goats.

Dosage and Administration

The recommended dose rates are :

Oral suspension

  • Sheep and goats: 1 ml of FASINEX 5 % per 5 kg bodyweight, corresponding to 10 mg of triclabendazole per kg
  • Cattle : 6 ml of FASINEX 10 % per 50 kg bodyweight, corresponding to 12 mg of triclabendazole per kg

Tablet

  • Sheep and goats : 1 tablet of FASINEX 250 per 25 kg bodyweight, corresponding to 10 mg of triclabendazole per kg
  • Cattle : 1 tablet of FASINEX 900 per 75 kg bodyweight, corresponding to 12 mg of triclabendazole per kg

FASINEX is given by single oral administration. Suspensions shaken well before use are suitable for use through most types of drenching guns. Intact tablets are given by balling gun, directly by hand or in a small amount of feed. Alternatively, the tablets may be crushed and shaken in water and the resulting fine suspension administered orally.

Treatment of animals suffering from fasciolosis: When sick animals are treated, particularly in outbreaks of acute or subacute fasciolosis, all other animals with the same history should be treated as well. A subsequent administration should be given several weeks later according to veterinary advice and infection challenge.

Strategic control: The treatment recommendations can be adapted freely to the local epidemiological situation in each region because of the efficacy against the 3 stages. The effectivity of FASINEX against early immature stages allows treatment intervals to be extended to the duration of the prepatent period or longer. In addition, animals may be treated already at or shortly after the end of the infection season.

Withdrawal periods

Withdrawal periods according to national registrations.

Special Precautions and Warnings

Do not contaminate ponds, waterways or ditches with the product or used container.

Shake well before use. FASINEX suspension is thixotropic for less settling out of triclabendazole. It may gel.
