Description and Composition
PANOLOG is an ointment containing: (per ml)
-
100.000 U Nystatin (INN)
- 2.500 U Thiostrepton (INN)
- 2.5 mg Neomycin (INN) as sulphate

Properties
PANOLOG ointment contains the antibiotics neomycin and thiostrepton for broad spectrum activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria, nystatin, which inhibits yeast and yeast-like fungi (including Malassezia), and triamcinolone acetonide, a steroid with anti-inflammatory, anti-pruritic and anti-allergic activity.
Indications
PANOLOG ointment is indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic otitis externa (including those cases complicated by Malassezia spp. and Candida albicans), anal gland infection in dogs and cats, interdigital cysts in dogs, and dermatitis, including eczematous dermatitis, contact dermatitis and seborrhoeic dermatitis. It is indicated in the management of dermatological disorders characterized by inflammation, particularly those caused, complicated or threatened by bacterial or yeast infections, and other conditions susceptible to corticoid-antibacterial-antifungal therapy. It is useful as an adjunct in the treatment of dermatitis due to parasitic infection.
Clinical trials have demonstrated that Panolog ointment is effective in the treatment of the ear mite, Otodectes cynotis, in the dog and cat. The mode of action is uncertain as none of the components in Panolog ointment have recognised acaricidal activity.
Dosage and Administration
Frequency of administration is dependent on the severity of the condition. For mild inflammation, application may range from once daily to once a week; for severe conditions PANOLOG ointment may be applied two or three times daily, if necessary. Frequency of treatment may be decreased as improvement occurs.
Otitis: Clean ear of impacted cerumen. Inspect canal and remove any foreign bodies such as grass awns, ticks etc.). Instill three to five drops of the ointment. It may be advisable to instill two to three drops of a local anaesthetic into the ear prior to cleaning.

Other dermatological disorders: clean affected areas, removing any encrusted discharge or exudates. Apply the ointment sparingly in a thin film.
Special Precautions and Warnings

Standard care is recommended to be certain that the tympanic membrane is not ruptured before instilling any medication into the ear.
During a course of treatment the situation should be reviewd frequently by close veterinary supervision.
Adverse reactions
